60 Advanced Adobe Photoshop Tutorials
I’m generally not not a huge fan of producing an effect in Photoshop that looks like it was produced in Photoshop. For instance when someone uses blending options like “glow” or “drop shadow” …and no other creative combination of anything else, & the effect IS the glow or drop shadow or the….. lens flare (god forbid.)

My thoughts are that after having used Photoshop since version 2.5 LE primarily for comping out web interfaces and some mild digital art, I’ve found that there are many features to help you but not do the work for you. You have to be creative and use the tools AND your own creativity to finish with a quality result. Otherwise you just look like you don’t know what you’re doing. Granted, there’s that saying “There’s nothing new under the sun” only our perspectives. So check out these tutorials and get inspired - if you have a tutorial you feel is worthy for me to add, email it to me and I’ll check it out.

Write a Killer Resume

A strong resume can give you the edge on any upcoming career opportunity. Mahalo, the hand-edited search engine that we've previously covered, offers a great how-to for building your resume for entry-level position seekers or seasoned professionals.

  • If you're re-entering the workforce, you may pick a different format than someone who's been working continuously.

  • A recent college graduate will focus more on educational background than an experienced worker.

  • If you're changing careers, you may opt for a different format than someone who is remaining in his current field.

The
guide explains how to compose the very-common chronological
résumé format, but also highlights how to proceed with
other types of resumes: skills resumes, functional resumes, combination
resumes and the new video resume.

We've certainly touched some ground on resume writing in the past, but this in-depth guide was something that shouldn't be overlooked.

Gamasutra - Game Design Essentials: 20 Difficult Games
But this is not to say that games must be easy. The impulse to make video games easier can be traced to a fundamental change in perception over what a game should be. The older school of thought, which dates back and beyond the days of Space Invaders to the era of pinball, is that a game should measure the player's skill. Arcade games, in fact, must make it difficult for a player to last for any great length of time in order to keep money coming into the coin box. The newer concept is that a game should provide an experience to the player. The player is to feel like some character, or like he's participating in a story, or that he's making some difference in a fictional realm.

The difference can be seen in Super Mario Bros., but may date to before it. Super Mario Bros. doesn't seem like it's entirely convinced either; many of the later levels are quite hard. The discarding of score, the emphasis on "suspension of disbelief" and storytelling, the trend towards providing a narrative longer than "see those guys; kill them," and the idea that a game can be "finished," these are all substantial indications of the change. A game intended only to measure skill, particularly, shouldn't have a completion state, because it would be like the game has given up.

About the name: Cooking For Engineers
Michael selected the name "Cooking For Engineers" on a whim. He has no idea if it means "To cook for the purposes of providing engineers with food" or "To instruct engineers in the science and art of cooking". He likes the ambiguity, and other people seem to find the name intriguing and even interesting. He regrets that the name can be misread (when in a rush) to be "Cooking Foreigners".

Signs of Deception:
Body Language of Lies:

• Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own body the liar takes up less space.

• A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

• Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear. Not likely to touch his chest/heart with an open hand.
Emotional Gestures & Contradiction

• Timing and duration of emotional gestures and emotions are off a normal pace. The display of emotion is delayed, stays longer it would naturally, then stops suddenly.

• Timing is off between emotions gestures/expressions and words. Example: Someone says "I love it!" when receiving a gift, and then smile after making that statement, rather then at the same time the statement is made.

• Gestures/expressions don’t match the verbal statement, such as frowning when saying “I love you.”

• Expressions are limited to mouth movements when someone is faking emotions (like happy, surprised, sad, awe, )instead of the whole face. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved: jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forehead push down, etc.
Interactions and Reactions

• A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often go on the offensive.

• A liar is uncomfortable facing his questioner/accuser and

Eye Movement and Direction and How it Can Reveal the Truth or a Lie

This is a continuation of our previous article " Detecting

about how eye direction can indicate the presence of a lie.

So can the direction a person's eyes reveal whether or
not they are making a truthful statement? Short answer: sort

. But,
it isn't as simple as some recent television shows or movies make it
seem. In these shows a detective will deduce a person is being untruthful
simply because they looked to the left or right while making a statement.

In reality, it would be foolish to make such a snap judgment without
further investigation... but the technique does have some merit. So,
here it is... read, ponder and test it on your friends and family to
see how reliable it is for yourself.

An introduction to Eclipse for Visual Studio users
An introduction to Eclipse for Visual Studio users

The Eclipse workspace
A simple HelloWorld project
The workspace directory

The Eclipse workspace is a directory in the filesystem that contains a special .metadata subdirectory. The .metadata directory contains all the workspace's private information, such as settings, caches, etc. Normally, you shouldn't modify any files in the .metadata directory. The workspace directory is also the default location for new projects in Eclipse.

Generally speaking, the Eclipse workspace serves the same purpose as a Visual Studio solution: It organizes top-level projects, folders, and files in a hierarchical structure. However, there are some major differences. A Visual Studio solution merely lists the projects it contains with their interdependencies, configurations, version-control information, etc.

The Eclipse workspace does much more than that. It manages most of the nonproject information, such as global preferences, windows layout, and search and navigation history. Eclipse can't start without a workspace, and you can't close a workspace the same way you can close a Visual Studio solution. Although it is possible to switch workspaces in Eclipse, many users use a single workspace that contains all their projects.

An anonymous reader notes an article up at IEEE Spectrum outlining the history and dangers of the accelerating tendency of music producers to increase the loudness and reduce the dynamic range of CDs. "The loudness war, what many audiophiles refer to as an assault on music (and ears), has been an open secret of the recording industry for nearly the past two decades and has garnered more attention in recent years as CDs have pushed the limits of loudness thanks to advances in digital technology. The 'war' refers to the competition among record companies to make louder and louder albums by compressing the dynamic range. But the loudness war could be doing more than simply pumping up the volume and angering aficionados — it could be responsible for halting technological advances in sound quality for years to come...

Communication is about getting others to adopt your point of view, to help them understand why you’re excited (or sad, or optimistic or whatever else you are.)If all you want to do is create a file of facts and figures, then cancel the meeting and send in a report.

While today's young computer professionals may have only passing familiarity with “Adventure”, the game had a tremendous effect on an earlier generation of programmers. Lines from “Adventure”, such as “You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike” and the magic word “XYZZY”, quickly entered hacker culture. The New Hacker Dictionary[7] includes the term “vadding” (“from VAD, a permutation of ADV (i.e., ADVENT), used to avoid a particular admin's continual search-and-destroy sweeps for the game”), defining it as a “leisure-time activity of certain hackers involving the covert exploration of the ‘secret’ parts of large buildings” (Raymond 1996, 465) .Image of a tourist cave showing photo of cave with Microsoft Office-style help window reading "It looks like you are trying to visit Mammoth Cave National Park. Design Exercise: Zoom Out - Beautiful Code
Experienced programmers look at structure. How deeply nested is the code? How well encapsulated? Long subroutines with lots of nesting raise red flags and are immediate targets for extract method refactoring. Compound statements are looked upon with skepticism; would a temp variable make it simpler?

How do you think structurally? As with the artist-to-be turning their picture upside-down to eliminate the distraction of recognition, programmers must eliminate their bias towards syntax details. A simple way to do this is to zoom out, literally. Make your font so small the syntax details are no longer visible, only the indentation. There's nothing left to consider but structure.

How to Actually Execute Your To-Do List: or, Why Writing It Down Doesn’t Actually Get It Done | zen habits

Every Monday is Productivity & Organization Day at Zen Habits.

Have you gotten good at organizing your tasks in a to-do list, but have trouble actually executing them? You’re not alone.

Getting things on your to-do list actually done is difficult because
it’s really a collection of habits that most people don’t
think about. Today, we’ll look at addressing those issues that
stop you from doing things, and the habits needed to overcome those
issues.

This post was prompted when reader BJ Thunderstone recently asked a great question:

A lot of productivity systems such as Getting Things
Done by David Allen or Do It Tomorrow by Mark Forster concern
themselves with writing lists of things to do. This skill is easy to
learn. But what if the problem isn’t making lists, but executing
your plan? What if you write “Get X, Y and Z done” and then
you can’t make yourself do any of these things?

I think that many people have a problem not with making to-do lists - but with executing what is written on these lists.

Javascript memory leaks

A (Re)-Introduction to JavaScript
Memory leaks #

An unfortunate side effect of closures is that they make it trivially easy to leak memory in Internet Explorer. JavaScript is a garbage collected language - objects are allocated memory upon their creation and that memory is reclaimed by the browser when no references to an object remain. Objects provided by the host environment are handled by that environment.

Browser hosts need to manage a large number of objects representing the HTML page being presented - the objects of the DOM. It is up to the browser to manage the allocation and recovery of these.

Internet Explorer uses its own garbage collection scheme for this, separate from the mechanism used by JavaScript. It is the interaction between the two that can cause memory leaks.

Zotero: el killer app para Firefox

http://www.zotero.org/blog/

Dead Reckoning » Archive » Zotero
my favourite part of all this is a small section at the bottom of Zotero’s Supported Sites page:

Zotero should work on sites that use these standards and technologies:

* Embedded RDF
* COinS
* (many more to come)

Please explain? This snippet indicates that Zotero has also been designed to grab citation information directly from standardised HTML source (rather than having to make database calls or use proprietary encoding formats). This is very good news for the web accessibility and standards movements because it should promote the deployment of open standards such as RDFa and citation microformats for academic resources.

Advertising the open-source way with Openads | The Open Road - CNET Blogs
I was surprised to find out that all of the ad server companies today charge for the privilege of using their technology. Just for the ad server you pay a monthly fee and/or a CPM fee (utility fee, cost per 1,000 impressions) just for using the software.

This actually sounds reasonable to me, but Openads provides the same thing...for free. Historically, people have used Openads because it's downloadable/free to use without paying a license fee. That's why Openads has more publishers using it than all other ad servers combined, with customers in 100-plus countries. Most of these are small- to medium-size publishers--the long tail of the advertising market, as it were.

So, today Openads and DoubleClick both serve disparate ad networks (though DoubleClick also provides its own) using the technology. The differentiator is the entrance fee.

If the findings seem too good to be true, you might read the methodologies section to see how the researcher validated their study tools and to see if the methods used to arriving at their conclusions are suspect. If you are a layman to the field of study or you want to see what literature directed the researcher to this research question, you might be interested in reading the background section of the paper. If you found the topic interesting, and want to continue this line of questioning, you would read the discussions section to learn interesting aspects about what the researcher would do differently had they the opportunity to do the research over again or to perform the research again in the future. A lot of the discussion section might pertain to how they might change their methodology, or change their survey instrument in order to increase the return of relevant data.

A designer’s ‘style’ is made up of a number of different factors,
though colour plays a large role. Everyone has their own method of
coming up with a good colour scheme, which will inevitably affect the
results.
Technical
A ‘technical’ method of colour-selection involves choosing one or two
dominant colours from the colour wheel, to be used with a small set of
complementary colours. Basic colour theory concepts like split
complementary and triadic colour schemes offer a wide range of
variation, particularly when you start throwing in shades, tints, and
saturation adjustments.
