Introduction to Pencil Shading

When
we start pencil shading, we tend to forget about the subject and start
just filling in the area, like a coloring-in. To get your shading
working properly in your drawing, you need to start thinking about the
marks you are making on the page and how they relate to the shapes that
you are shading. There are a few tips to get you started in this Introduction to Pencil Shading

Keys to Drawing with Imagination

Dodson's
'Keys to Drawing' has become a classic drawing text and the title of
this book plays shamelessly on the title of that work. That said, 'Keys
to Drawing with Imagination' is a surprisingly interesting book. The
emphasis is on illustration with text kept brief, but there are some
useful concepts, for example:

"This work reminds us of the
important role that constraints play on creativity. Constraints often
dictate structure. They set boundaries for creative play."

(Consider rhyming poetry, or the haiku, as an example of this:
the form forces inventiveness.) If you need to break out of a rut or
are often in the position of trying to find a new angle on an old idea,
you might just find the kick-start you need here. Read the review of Keys to Drawing with Imagination

Drawing Dragons

There
is no one 'right way' to draw dragons. You can be as creative as you
like. Where do you start? Try beginning from the top down with a
traditional dragon head, like this fire-breathing Dragon.

To get a really reptilian, beady-eyed look, read these tips on drawing Dragon eyes.
To get really jaw-dropping realism in your dragon drawing, you need to
use a few tricks to convince your viewer's eyes that they are looking
at something that might be real, even though they know it doesn't
exist. Using realist drawing techniques and photographic or three-D
reference sources, you can make it look as though you were drawing a dragon from life..
